news.outlookindia.com | BJP to Move Bill for Barring Entry of Goans in Casinos

The state BJP today said it will move a bill seeking ban on Goans in casinos in the state on lines with the one existing in Nepal.

Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar said the bill would be moved during the budget session, which will begin from March 16 at Porvorim.

"There can be amendment to the existing Anti Gambling Act in which only non-Goans can be allowed to enter the casinos," he said adding that there should not be a ban on tourists as they will come, spend and go back while locals will stay back.

"Tourists at least carry their return ticket. But locals, who have these casinos accessible all the time, get habituated to gambling," Parrikar, a former State Chief Minister said.

Goa has six offshore casinos and around a dozen on-land casinos which are operating from different five star hotels.

Parrikar said that entry of locals in casinos can be regulated by asking the entrants to prove their place of residence through documents like licence, passport, or PAN card.

BJP, which has been opposing off shore casinos in the state, will also seek ban on advertisements of casinos.

"If liquor ads can be banned then why should casino ads be allowed?," he questioned.

Parrikar said during the current Assembly session the opposition benches will also question government on its inability to shift casinos away from the city limits.

"Government had adopted a decision to shift them away into the sea. We will question why it has not happened," the Leader of Opposition said.
