With the Kaiga nuclear plant located on the state's border with Karnataka, Rajya Sabha member Shantaram Naik today said that the government should work out a full proof strategy to avert Fukushima nuclear plant like crisis in Goa.
Naik said he had made mention about this concern in the Upper House today with the concern that horrific Fukushima experience is not repeated in Goa, which is just few kilometres away from Kaiga nuclear plant.
The state's only Rajya Sabha MP said that although nuclear power plants are established to meet power needs of the country, Goa, which is closest to the plant, has not benefited out of it.
"Kaiga is giving constant nightmares to Goa," he claimed.
Quoting a study conducted by an environment engineer, which is already submitted to Goa government, Naik said it was suggested that if tragedy strikes evacuation of an area 2 to 5km around the reactor must be completed within six hours; within 12 hours for an area 5 to 25 km away, within 24 hours for an area 25 to 75km away and within 48 hours for distances beyond 75 km of an accident.
