http://blogs.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/randomaccess/entry/when-30k-turn-up-spontaneously-against-corruption-politicians-better-worry#comments

I was at the march against corruption rally organised by Arvind Kejriwal’s ‘India Against Corruption’ organisation in central Delhi yesterday. It was a delightful winter noon with a gentle sun and a soothing breeze. The real icing on the cake, however, was the unbelievable crowd that had shown up on a Sunday afternoon.

In a country where increasingly we see crowds gather with great difficulty unless it’s a cricket match. Where almost every politician, save a few, has to necessarily orchestrate paid crowds involving buses to ferry them and inducing them with food, liquor, even money, for their rallies and still find few takers, the number of 30 thousand spontaneous crowd was heartening.

And what a congregation it was! School children, college students; I saw a few with IIT Delhi jackets, doctors, lawyers, armymen, housewives, simple villagers from districts around Delhi, nuns, sisters, pundits, gurus, were all there. Even the Delhi police constables on duty were helpful with one of them remarking to me – sab achche kaam ke liye aaye hain (All have come for a good cause).

I have little doubt that this spontaneous show of strength would have made the political class uneasy, more so with them witnessing the events unfolding in Tunisia and Egypt. While it may be too early to predict a similar uprising in India, for I think we are intrinsically far more stable and also patient, but my gut feel is that the way things are moving in this nation, the political class certainly cannot take things for granted any more.

The way people lapped up what was being spoken there was surprising, and at one level scary too. The no-holds barred speeches by the likes of Prashant and Shanti Bhushan, Ram Jethmalani, Medha Patkar, religious gurus and a bevy of others was something not heard at a public rally in a long time. Medha Patkar, especially, was devastating in her observations about the industrialists-political nexus.

The clear articulation of how most of our so called anti-corruption laws and bodies are useless, by the father and son activist lawyers duo of Prashant and Shanti Bhushan, too had everyone asking for more. That was followed by Arvind Kejriwal demonstrating how even the new probity bill being contemplated - Lok Pal - will be nothing but an attempt to pull wool over everybody’s eyes. I had discussed this in an earlier post (Don’t let up against corruption). Basically, all these so called bodies are made defunct by the babu-politician (and perhaps industrial lobbies) nexus even before they take wing by making them toothless. All of them have mere recommendatory powers and no more. Little wonder, therefore, that all their observations are treated by the powers that be with supreme contempt.

But as I said, if the mood in the gathering is any indication, all those who have been getting away with the loot of the nation, riding on the current toothless mechanism in place, need to worry.

The people of this nation are fed up of the platitudes being served by the rulers and administrators day in and day out. They are aware of the loot and plunder that is going on in the name of the poor. The Swiss bank account information is being actively pursued by an almost activist Supreme Court, as is the information on several other issues of public interest. We are all witness to growing anarchy. None can forget the burning alive of a senior government officer in Manmad by the oil mafia that indulged in fuel adulteration. The list of such brazen acts is growing at an alarming pace. Not reacting or taking it easy is no longer an option.

As a speaker at the rally extolled the gathering yesterday, we should now tell all political parties that we need genuine moves to curtail corruption and bring this country to some order. We need to ask them if they support the new probity law that empowers action against the looters. Only if we have unequivocal support from them that they are with us in this in right earnest can they seek our votes, else we will look elsewhere.

The message has to go across to as many as possible. On the Internet , there is a Facebook page called India Against Corruption (http://www.facebook.com/IndiACor?ref=ts&v=wall). We should all go there and register our protest and speak our mind. Let there be pressure points all around, so that those who have always escaped unscathed in their loot of the nation so far are made aware that their days are numbered.

Here is to a corruption free India.

First of all, accept my congrats for your relentless efforts and contribution to make a grand success of the rally. I expected TV channels to cover the speeches live or it atleast give it prominent coverage in the news bulletins. Rajesh, there is still time, please take it up with the 'news channels' to telecast the gist of individual speech, by the respected speakers, one by one in its daily prime time bulletins. And this should continue for a week so that more and more viewers get to know of the 'fight against corruption' and participate in it.

The Bureaucracts have built such a strong fortress around them that nailing them has become almost impossible. The earlier Govts, including that of NDA, tried to demolish their cover but in vain. Theirs is the strongest UNION and unless they are leashed and tamed the 'loot' of nation cannot be stopped. The politician-businessmen nexus has also developed with the complicity of bureaucrats. It need be checked and contained forthwith. Tunisia and Egypt are burning and the iron is red hot here too. It is, therefore, the right time to strike the final blow. This CORRUPT Govt must go and the next one be given a stern warning that people will not tolerate wrong doing any more.

Dear Rajesh , We need to fight for a RE INDEPENDENCE , Independence from the corrupt , inept , nexus of politicians , bureaucrats and business houses with vested interests . this battle for re independence has to be fought by us INDIANS without any political support , without any leader , it has to be spontaneous by one and all . We have to be ready to sacrifice , in terms of delayed issuance of legitimate licences, permissions, without paying any bribes , we may have to endure delays , harassment and if we do some thing wrong by mistake be ready to face the consequences legally rather than wriggle out by paying bribes . The fight todays is more daunting and hard because we are now fighting our own masters , the BROWN SAHIBS , the ENEMY WITHIN . We have to fight this for our future generations so that we do not leave the Gen next a legacy of bankrupt country whose wealth is lying some where else while we struggle and suffer . LET EVERY ONE RISE AND ANNOUNCE ENOUGH IS ENOUGH . WE WANT THINGS DONE RIGHT WAY AND DEMAND A CORRUPT FREE GOVERNMENT AND SOCIETY . WE DESERVE IT AND WE DEMAND IT FOR EACH AND EVERY CITIZEN OF THIS ONCE GREAT COUNTRY .

I have been following TOI's vote and many places where I wanted to comment on this subject(Corruption)I did comment in my own way. Though I am away from the country but I learn the magnitude of crime and corruption is increasing day by day. Off hand I know Ghaziabad is becoming the rape capital or rape city of India. Many cities are famous for political rowdyism so on so forth. I am aware that drugs flow freely amongst the pseudo Modernists in the name of broad mindedness. This morning it struck me that the best way to rein in corruption would be to bring more transparency in administration of essential services followed by strong Accountability. We have many rich people now in India even if each one of them takes one essential service and provides them IT backing we should be up and running and anti corruption campaign in our own way. Assume an essential service like power supply.Example of a breakdown at one of the homes the complaint can be lodged online and the officer in charge can see what is the expected lag time and let the consumer know it and after the lag time things are not fixed then the consumer can go a step further.Transparency be awarded to Journalists and Media who can give out aging reports and criticize the official or ask an explanation. We run support services for the whole world why can't these be provided in India for Indians. Then I recommended a Lok Ayukta type of board to be headed by well known personalities of cities, towns with authority to prosecute or charge a corrupt person. The committee I recommended should keep changing every 3 years and not a single member in this committee or panel should have any political affiliation nor should have had directly or indirectly be involved in any crime be it petty as one can think it to be. Many readers would think my comments are far fetched but I am an optimist and I know if the grass root levels are controlled then the upper levels will bow down. We should pursue this Passionately

Further assembly of certain persons on the dais may send out a mixed signal. While cleaning system is necessary and some changes in political as well as administrative setups are required,we must hit at the root of corruption.Rightly or wrongly, corruption has gradually been accepted as a normal phenomenon in society. Fighting this attitude is also to be attempted. We need a social and moral cleaning and here people like Ramdev Baba will be greatly helpful.

Rajesh, your blog was indeed very inspiring & my mind went back to the post Emergency days of 1977 when we used to get goose pimples on hearing the speeches of some of the victorious Janata Party functionaries. But I am afraid we cannot read much in what has been achieved so far in the fight against corruption. Indeed, the Babu-Neta-Lala nexus is very well entrenched. And the basic fallacy is to believe that replacing one political party (or coalition) by another is going to make an important change. The only way to battle corruption is to modify existing constitutional arrangements & institutions and to set up new ones. For example, the present system of electoral arrangement & institutions will have to be changed to make them difficult to be corrupted. Similarly, the working of police & the investigative agencies needs to be drastically altered to eliminate (or severely restrict) its control by the political executive, retaining only its answerability to the judiciary. Currently, not much is being done to initiate thinking on these ideas & rather naively we seem to conclude that the large crowds at anti-corruption rallies is a very positive sign. This is dangerous because eventually, when these large crowds get disenchanted with the stubborn status quo, the feeling of confusion & disorientation may well propel the people to follow a clever demagogue who will promise them the moon in return for a de-democratisation of the political system. And this death of democracy would mean a long coma for many human values.

V P Singh used Bofors corruption charges to topple Congress government and brought along with him instability, Mandal, Lalu, Mulayam and finally return of Congress under P V Narsimha rao. The problem is not limited to corruption at the top but it expands to morally defunct society. At present, there is no leadership available in India who can take the whole country on his/her shoulders towards a corruption and crime free India. Evolution of a credible leader and credible team is not on horizon. Society is not able to distinguish between right and wrong. The fix for wrought in society is much bigger challenge for Indians. The movement against corruption needs to have short term and long-term agenda to engage the entire country. The leadership of movement need to 1. Keep the movement going for many years to come 2. Ignite search for viable alternative to the defunct political system 3. Provide alternatives to the existing framework for governance by the people, current framework of governance is not delivering any succor to the vast majority of population, which is deprived of the basic infrastructure for employment, education and health 4. Provide an alternative electoral process, which reduces the use of money power in the elections and tracks the use of money in the elections 5. Engage media to voice the concerns of the poorest of the poor, if required create alternate print and electronic media platforms for debate on the issues faced by the nation 6. Promote morality by example in all the fields with the next generation and youth. This 6 point program with suitable timeline can be the core agenda for the movement and its successful implementation will transform the country to sustain its economic success and provide inclusive growth to every Indian.

What is being achieved is to go for simple and winnable action points that can make structural differences to fighting corruption. Corruption in India is hydra headed and the politicians and bureaucrats responsible for governance are themselves neck deep in corruption. Expecting them to take steps to change the constitution to eliminate corruption is impossible. Hence the only way is to apply pressure directly from various forums and media, that unless this Jan Lokpal bill is passed, India would go the Egypt/Tunisia way. The revolution in Tunisia was actually started by a small vendor who sold bananas.

Rajesh, excellent article and timing is outstanding. I congratulate organizers. Lets hope our actions one day wipe out corruption from our nation. Lets analyze whats happening in Egypt,Tunisia 1. Tunisia & Egypt are both republic. But both have been virtual aristocratic. Since 2-3 decades. If their constitution had presidential term limits they wouldn't have to go through all these pain. 2. Revolution there picking up steam because people know who their enemy is. Its their president. Tunisian president Ben Ali fled country. In Egypt protesters main goal is to oust Mubharak. They have clear goal. But In India corruption is like Ravan which has multiple heads. There are multiple rulers who have stuck with power since decades. We have to have process to automatically evict these rulers. Term limits is the only rule which will ensure there will no rulers and get us public servants. Fighting corruption is very tough task. Virtually you are fighting with shadows. I hope you also agree If I say corruption can never be 100% cured. I am worried ,if your message 'Fight against corruption' would reach common man correctly. Fear of punishment and consequences is the only tool to tackle corruption. Even in the Western countries people obey the laws because of fear of being punished. Yes I do agree that the police and judicial branches are independent of the politicians for the system to have succeeded in those countries. However, if the crime has consequences people will think twice before breaking the law. India has long suffered because of its POLITICIANS and those THUGS are the ones we need to go after. Once they have been dealt with we can start restructuring our bureaucracy and the whole system where accountability becomes of paramount importance. They must DIE!!!Confisticate all the loot from these looters. Country does not have laws to punish the corrupt because our political system itself is corrupt which is made by Congress and other political parties.

Rajesh, support is there from entire India for a cause as noble as this. Full marks to you, Arvind Kejriwal and all those thousands who took the protest march. Glad to hear about policemen supporting this. This is just the beginning. Continuous, relentless fight against corruption would open the age old eyes of our politicians and we may see fresh young faces taking the rein of country's politics. Some of the protesters themselves may contest election in near future. If Rajesh Kalra is interested in politics, my vote during elections would be reserved !!!!
