Agriculture

Agriculture is the main source of the livelihood in the District Udhampur. Large part of the population of the district derived its livelihood from the Agriculture Sector. Agriculture holding in the district are small. However, the size is better as compared to the State average. The average size of operational land holdings in the district is 1.11 hectares against 0.88 hectares for the State. As per the Agriculture Census 1995-96, the number of operational holdings is 1.14 covering an area of 1.26 hectares. The main food crops of the district are Maize and Rice in Kharif and Wheat in the Rabi season. The most important crop is maize which is grown in the entire district covering almost 51.85% area of the total sown area. Wheat is the second crop of the district with 35.02% area of the total sown area of the District.

Out of total area under cultivation 0.42% was covered by the Fruit and vegetables in the district. The main fruit grown in the district are Apple, Apricot, Citrus, mango, Grapes, Guava, Papaya, Loquat, Walnut etc. About 25 fruit nurseries are setup in the district which distribute more than 0.11 lakh fruit plants every year.
