11 lakh yuan link: Karmapa may be a Chinese plant
TNN, Jan 29, 2011, 03.06am IST

NEW DELHI/DHARAMSHALA/SHIMLA: The 17th Karmapa, Ugyen Trinley Dorje, could be a Chinese "plant", suspect Indian intelligence agencies looking into the spiritual leader's affairs after raids on his transit home at Sidhbari near Dharamshala on Thursday night. Rs 8.5 crore worth foreign currency was recovered.

Intelligence agencies say the Karmapa may be part of a Chinese plan to control monasteries along the Sino-Indian border. The exact circumstances of Dorje's "escape" from Tibet in 2000 have always puzzled Indian agencies. He claimed to have hoodwinked Chinese authorities by going into exclusion and reaching Nepal.

A source said the agencies have information to suggest the Karmapa has links with China, including funding. "The huge recovery, including 11 lakh Chinese yuan, substantiates what we have always suspected. The Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax authorities have been asked to probe this," said an intelligence official. He added Dorje may be questioned.

Besides the Yuan and Rs 4 lakh, the police recovered US and Australian dollars, Japanese Yen, pound sterling and Thai Baht. "There's no account of these currencies. Questioning of a close aide of the Karmapa, Rabjaychojan alias Shakti Lama, arrested after Thursday's raid, has not revealed the source of the money," said the official. Lama's claim Rs 4 lakh was withdrawn from a bank at Majnu Ka Tila, a Tibetan market in Delhi, is being verified.

Himachal Pradesh chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said it was for the Union home and external affairs ministries to act against the Tibetan refugees. He said his government's mandate was restricted to observing the violation of Himachal Pradesh Tenancy and Land Reforms Act.

Indian government is keeping close eye on Tibetans. That's why Tibetans need to renew their stay permit every year and meet the SP of the respective district. What is the problem with you Coorg boy. The Indian society itself is full of scams and scandals, which is in a way influencing Tibetans. We cannot make things work legally and have to pay bribe at every step to get things done. If you live in filth for long..you too will start smelling filth. So who is to blame?

Tibetans have been enjoying Indian hospitality as guests for long now but they also have to follow the protocols of being a guest. India had to suffer a war in 1962 against China for giving shelter to Tibetans. Tibetans should respect that and act keeping in mind the constraints and interests of their host nation.

CB - why blame Tibetians, even we Indians enjoy and at the same time take unwanted advantage of the freedom being given to us. Your comments have certainly disgraced every Indian, for we beleive in extending a helping hand even to our foes, if the need comes. 1962 war with china has nothing to do with Tibet. So do some groundwork before commenting on anything.

CB we enjoyed your countries hospitality for so long and we really want to leave since it has been too long time to live as a guest. Also your government doesn't grant us refugee status or citizenship, which is in violation of International law as well as Indian law. As for China invasion, it is lack of governance and will on part of Indian government that they suffered so much loss in 1962. It is due to Chinese governments aggressive policies to expand its boundaries since they suffered so much during the colonial rule of Japan and the European. As for law and order, most of the Tibetans abide by the Indian laws but considering the swam of scam in India I am sure some Tibetan 'chela' are following their guru although in a bad light. (India is guru for Tibetans since Buddhism came to Tibet from India and most of the master are Indian)

That is so not true. India got into war with China over Aksai Chin. Nehru was betrayed by China. Slogans in 1960 was Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai. Nehru reached out to China and in the process sold Tibet. So, let us not rewrite history. Let us be fair about what happened. Tibetans are grateful for that hospitality but to suggest India fought over Tibet is utter lie.

TOI - most comments posted here feel that India was betrayed by Dalai Lama, Karmapa and all other Tibetans exiled in Dharamsala. India media specifically singled out Karmapa as an agent of China and expanding his activity in name of Buddhism. Most Indians think that all Tibetans labelled "Chinki" should return to Tibet voluntarily or else India deports them by force.

This is the problem with our law enforcement agencies. In any case this news should have been kept away from the media glare. If Karmapa is indeed in cahoots with Chinese then we could have used him as double agent. If he is not planted by Chinese then we have maligned him and must apologize to him. I think the law enforcement agencies are inadequately trained. All this in hindsight.

According to Tibetan people believe and Buddhist culture offering money to our High lama such as to Karmapa lama is auspicious way to do it . So every day many people coming to see him and offering all kinds of money. What ever he gets money it's for building Monastery and offering free food to monks and lay people in his monastery. So these days many rich people strongly believe offering money to lama like karmapa is good way to used there money to some good cause. So i want to tell very clearly as Tibetan and son of India we as Tibetan will never betrayed our Mother India, but meantime don't treat us as step son. What ever occur to karmapa lamas monastery is without knowledge of proper law on money transferring and i am sure there is no question of karmapa is Chinese Agent.
