Drumstick is an excellent blood purifier | Deccan Chronicle

Moringa oleifera or the drumstick, commonly referred to as Shojne in Bengali, Munagakaya in Telugu, Shevaga in Marathi and Nuggekai in Kannada, is an exceptionally nutritious vegetable tree with a variety of potential uses.

The drumstick is a true tonic and like all other vegetables, it is high in fibre, low in calories and zero in fat.

A wonderful cleanser that has antibacterial properties, its pods as well as leaves have a large nutritional value.

Both are rich in calcium, which we all know is important for our bones and teeth especially in growing children. It aids those suffering from malnutrition.

The drumstick is rich in vitamin C which helps fight against viruses and bacteria. Its iron content makes it valuable for people suffering from anaemia. The vegetable provides expectant mothers with the necessary amounts of calcium, iron and vitamins. It has been found to reduce post-delivery complications and aids in easy delivery.

It is also very effective in treating digestive disorders. It has been helpful in cases of diarrhoea as well as jaundice. Not only this, eat it to cure several urinary disorders as well as respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchitis.

Being an excellent blood purifier, the drumstick is good for your skin — it is effective in treating pimples, blackheads and other problems too.

Drumstick vegetable

Ingredients

2 drumsticks
3 tbsps gram flour (besan)
¼ tsp haldi
1 tsp green chilli paste
1 tsp jaggery
A pinch of heeng (asafoetida)
1 tsp extra virgin
olive oil
½ cup slightly sour buttermilk
½ cup chopped coriander

Method

Cut the drumsticks into 4 pieces and boil with very little water. Once soft, strain the water. Add gram flour and sour buttermilk to the strained water and blend. Take extra virgin olive oil in a pan and add heeng, haldi, green chilli paste, salt and the above liquid paste.

Stir continuously till the mix is thick. Now add jaggery and the boiled drumstick. Boil for about 2 minutes. Garnish with chopped coriander and serve hot.
